At this time we don’t have a lot of information only that we were to stop watering our crops. This won’t happen because we have many friends and neighbors who have offered to bring water in and hand water each and every plant if necessary.  We are not going down without a fight.

Here is what you can do

1. Contact Mark Sivazlian at the State engineer’s office (775)684-2874 or fax at (775)-684-2810 asks him to help us to obtain a waiver until we can complete the permit process.
2. Contact your elected officials  both state and federal ask them to contact the state engineer and request that we be grated a waiver
3. Write, fax call the Governors office ask them to support the waiver process
4. And finally have your friends, family and their friends contact the above and let them know that Rise and Shine Farms has a lot of friends and supporters out there.

We started out with a bad year and doesn’t seem to be improving. We know we have the best customers in the world and we will get past this obstacle and any others that get in our way. I looked up the word quit and it just doesn’t sound like us.

This afternoon we received a visit from the water police they claim that one of our neighbors has filed a complaint that we use to much water. Since we have been supported by our neighbors and most of them are customers we find it hard to believe any of them would file such a complaint.

From the estimates we have we are using less water than we are allocated even for our well.

What do they want?  They want us to stop watering and let the crops that are just beginning to come in dry up and blow away and give in to the government.  They want to make us criminals for providing you our customers and supporters with fresh wholesome food. They want us to pay thousands of dollars for application fees, surveys, permit fees; this permitting process will take several months and were told we needed to stop watering as of now.  When all of this happens it is you the consumer who ultimately pays.

We need your help and support now more than ever.  This is an election year this is a fight we can win call your state Assemblyman and Senators , call the governors office call everyone you can think of let them know that you support Rise and Shine Farms.

If we need to truck in water then that is what we will do

All of the poultry here at Rise and Shine Farms are raised the way nature intended , no matter for eggs or meat chickens are allowed to range over the farm with in limits for their safety.
They are allowed to forage and scratch for insects and seeds, take  dust baths , breath clean air and plenty of sunshine.
We do not use antibiotics and feed a natural diet of Grass, corn and other grains to suppliment their diets.

We process our broilers every month except January, February, March , April, November and December (see schedule below)

If there is a demand we will process in the off months

You should allow your chicken to age in the refrigirater for a couple days before cooking or freezing this will give it a much better flaver.

A CSA, (Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for members of the community to create a relationship with a local farmer and to receive a weekly basket of produce. By making a financial commitment to a farmer, people become "subscribers" or “shareholders” of the CSA. The majority of CSA farmers have members pay for the season up-front. Some CSAs (not this one!) also require that members work a small number of hours on the farm during the growing season.

A CSA season typically runs through the primary growing season, from late spring through early fall. CSAs have their roots in Europe and the UK and have grown by leaps and bounds in this country in the last five years.

In addition to all the bounty, a weekly basket often includes a newsletter with farm news, and recipes for some of the seasonal produce in your basket.

How is the CSA good for farmers?

Most of farmers’ costs occur during the off season when there is little cash flow and a good deal of expenses for things like seeds, fertilizers, part-time help, boxes, permits, insurance, and other market needs. Many farmers are forced to take out loans or run up credit card debt in order to pay for these. Getting their money up front allows farmers to lower their overall costs and earn money free and clear during the season.

How is the CSA good for customers?

Customers end up paying much less for produce they’d buy at the supermarket or, at times, even the farmers market. You’ll also get the cream of the crop each week and CSA members have first dibs on things like asparagus, sugar snap peas, and the first heirloom tomatoes.

Joining a CSA will help you stick to your health goals by establishing a habit of buying a basket of local, sustainably raised fruits and vegetables to have on hand all the time.

Customers can feel good about establishing a relationship and supporting local farmers. You’ll also be helping to protect farmland by keeping it in production while at the same time enjoying the healthiest and most delicious food available. (I imagine you will also save gas by not running to the supermarket twice a week).

Also, the food you get in your basket will be picked the day before or the same day you receive it. So there’s no way to really compare it to what you would buy at the supermarket.

What is the buying club?

The buying club is set up for those of you who only want farm fresh produce and meats or other farm products without having to subscribe to a CSA. It was also set up so that our CSA members can add to their weekly share. CSA Members will be automatically joined to the buying club with their membership.

The USDA is well on its way to approving Monsanto's GE alfalfa. In its own report, the USDA acknowledges the problem with contamination but says that consumers may not care enough about it for the USDA to block Monsanto's modified alfalfa seeds. [1] This is absurd since one of the main reasons people buy organic food is to avoid genetically engineered crops.

The USDA is only accepting public comments for the next two weeks. We need you to write to the USDA right now and tell them they must not approve Monsanto's mutant alfalfa.[2]

Just like its corn and soy, Monsanto's alfalfa is designed to tolerate its leading herbicide: Roundup. We can't allow Monsanto's greed to take-over one more crop. FARM HAPPENINGS

Some good things have been happening here this last week.The hens have doubled the egg production, just a little sun and they get excited. We received our second shipment of new chicks, looks like there will be plenty of eggs this summer.

Today was delivery day for the new poultry processing equipment. everything is new scalder, plucker, chill tanks, and scales. No more spending hours plucking birds. We will now be able to do the job in a quarter of the time we used to.We will never have to turn away people who want chickens simply because of time. Don’t be alarmed the birds will be just as juicy and tasty as always. We will also be offering Ducks and Geese for the Holiday season along with our Heritage Turkey.

We have reached the halfway point for the CSA membership we will stop at 100 this year. We learned a valuable lesson from last year we will stop at 100 and plant for twice that many.
